# Ask guests your own questions

Intake questions let you ask guests whatever you need when they book. Examples
are the occasion, dietary restrictions, whether they want a pickup arranged,
or how they heard about you.

Intake questions are set per experience. A harvest dinner can ask about
allergies while a walking tour asks about mobility.

***

## Add questions to an experience

1. Open the experience and find the **Guest questions** card.
2. Click **Add question**.
3. Type the **label**: the question as the guest reads it.
4. Choose a **type**.
5. Tick **Required** if the guest can't book without answering.

Questions save with the rest of the experience.

| Type | Guest sees |
| - | - |
| **Text** | A single-line box |
| **Single choice** | A dropdown of your options |
| **Multiple choice** | Checkboxes — they can pick several |
| **Yes / No** | Two radio buttons |

For the two choice types, a **choices** editor appears inside that question's
box. Add a row per option.

### Reorder or remove questions

Guests are asked the questions in the order you see them. Put the ones you
most want answered first.

* Drag a question by the handle on its left to move it.
* If you'd rather not drag, focus the handle and use the arrow keys.
* Choices reorder the same way inside their question.
* A question carries its choices with it when it moves.
* The trash can on the right removes a row.

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title={"If you added an empty question row by accident"}>
    A question row with a blank label is simply dropped when you save. You don't
    have to tidy it up.
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

### Limits on intake questions

* **5 questions** per experience
* **80 characters** per question label
* **10 choices** per question, **40 characters** each
* **300 characters** per answer

The 5-question cap is a feature. Every extra question is a chance for a guest
to give up.

## What guests see

The questions appear in **step 2** of the booking window, in the order you
arranged them. They come after add-ons and before the special-requests box.

Required questions carry an asterisk. The guest can't reserve without
answering them, and sees a message such as:

> Please fill in “What's the occasion?” to continue.

Answers survive if the guest goes back to change the time and comes forward
again.

## Where the answers show up

* **The reservation's page.** Answers appear in the main card, just above the
  special requests. Each question is in small grey type, with the guest's
  answer beneath it.
* **The reservations export.** Answers are in the **Intake answers** column
  when you export reservations from the reservations list.

Answers don't appear on the reservations list or the host view. If an answer
needs to reach the floor during service, put it where the floor looks. The
**special requests** box shows as a note icon on host rows.

***

## Answers are a snapshot

Riserva stores the **question text as it was asked**, alongside the answer.
Edit or delete a question later, and old reservations still show what that
guest was actually asked. You can never end up with an answer sitting under a
question nobody asked them.

Choice answers are checked against your real options, so nothing invented can
be submitted.

***

## Staff reservations don't ask them

Intake questions are a storefront feature. When your team books someone by
phone, the questions aren't presented.

If the answers matter for phone reservations, ask them out loud. Type the
answers into **Special requests**, or add a comment to the reservation
afterwards.

***

## Write good questions

* **Ask for what changes what you do.** "Any dietary restrictions?" changes
  the kitchen's night. "How did you hear about us?" is a survey: every guest
  pays for it with one more field before they can reserve.
* **Prefer choices over text** where you can. "Celebrating anything?" as
  Birthday / Anniversary / Engagement / Just visiting is answerable in one tap
  and reportable at a glance.
* **Make almost nothing required.** A required question is a checkout
  obstacle. Allergies on a dinner, yes. Occasion, no.
